My Top 5 New US Shows

The past month I've been checking out the new US TV shows and I must say there is a lot of good new shows there just like the 2007-2008 TV season. Hopefully this time a lot will be successful and will stay on air for a long time. Anyway, here are my Top 5 favorite new shows:

5. Cougar Town

The show's title is tongue-in-cheek and the show's is a bit tacky but I still find it hilarious. Courtney Cox is a hoot on this show and I love the supporting cast. This is like the first season of Desperate Housewives minus the mystery. But the show is really polarizing, hate it or love it, and obviously I'm on the latter side. This is the type of the show that will definitely be part of your "Guilty Pleasure" list.

4. FlashForward

Touted as the next Lost, this show delivers well. The premise of a worldwide blackout is intriguing and so far the episodes have been successful on keeping the suspense of the story. I'm excited if they could really stop the future from happening or if they stop it would it have a consequence? I hope the shows keeps the quality of writing good all throughout the season.

3. Glee

Definitely, the most hyped new show of the season and is already receiving a backlash. Nevertheless, this one of the most captivating shows I've seen in recent years. The musical productions are well produced and the writing is tight, they already have a breakout character with Jane Lynch's Sue Sylvester bringing the laugh out loud moments every episode with her sarcasm and deadpan humor. Plus, the music numbers are so good that I wish I was still in school so I could joined a Glee club haha.

2. The Middle

This is a sitcom about a middle class family in the middle part of the US and the show captured how the life of an average family in the time of an economic recession. It has the laughs and the heart. You can't help but feel Frankie's stress but you would still feel delighted on the ways on how she and her family cope with their day-to-day struggle. Among my top 5 favorite new shows this is the lowest rated so hopefully it would pick up eventually because it will be a shame if will just have a short run.

1. Modern Family

This sitcom is truly wonderful. This mockumentary chronicles the lives of three different families which are all part of one big family, one is the traditional family with a mom, dad ,and 3 kids, the other is a May-December couple with a kid from the wife's previous marriage and the last one is a gay couple who recently adopted a baby girl. What I love about this sitcom is the cast, even if the show is just one month old you felt like you've watched these people for a long time already, there is warmth among the cast that they could throw in lines with each other at ease. Each episode is tightly written with a theme that will come in full circle as an episode closes. The mockumentary set up is just perfect because there are lot of cringe-worthy moments during the interviews. My favorite characters here are Ty Burrel's wannabee cool daddy Phil and Eric Stonestreet's flamboyant other half of the gay couple Cameron, thinking of some of their scenes makes me laugh already. So far the show has been doing well in the ratings so hopefully this show would stay on the air for years to come.

Other notables: The Good Wife is a solid courtroom drama with an interesting ongoing character drama as well, it fills the void left by Judging Amy. I like the premise of Community (which is about a community college) although I find the supporting cast weak but still enjoyable to watch. The Vampire Diaries is reminiscent of the late 90s/early 00s young adult fantasy dramas and if you like shows like Roswell and Buffy the Vampire Slayer you will like this one. And course if you are into Twilight and True Blood, this latest offshoot of the vampire pop culture fad is not a bad addition. There is room for improvement for Accidentally on Purpose but the lead characters have enough chemistry to make me watch every week and see how their unconventional relationship set-up will work out.
