Eminem knocks down Lady Antebellum

This week, Eminem's "Recovery" surpasses Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" to be the best selling album of 2010, "Recovery" sold 2,656,184 copies to date while "Need You Now" sold 2,641,090. I think Eminem will ultimately top this year's list although we should not count out Taylor Swift and Susan Boyle, either one could pull an upset. Swift will release her third album "Speak Now" on October 25 while Boyle's Christmas Album is due on November. Many are predicting that they could have huge selling week-to-week sales that would be enough to top the overall list for the year. While no doubt that these two acts will sell well, I don't think they will have monster week to week sales to catch on Eminem's "Recovery" especially with the current sales climate. But who knows? Let's wait and see, I'm personally hoping for an exciting race.

Meanwhile, two previous Grammy Awards winners for Best New Artist competed for the #1 spot on this week's Billboard 200 Albums chart. The 2009 winner Zac Brown Band latest album "You Get What You Give" won the chart battle against 2004 winner Maroon Five's latest "Hands All Over". Zac Brown Band's previous album "The Foundation" debuted at #17 with 44,00 but had longevity [never charted below #54 for it's entire 97 weeks (+ counting) on the chart] and sold more than a million copies. Like last week's champ, Linkin Park, Maroon Five latest album witnessed steep drop from the first week sales of their previous set. "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" sold 429,000 while "Hands All Over" sold 142,000. It should be noted that the 'It Wont Be Soon" had the #1 hit "Makes Me Wonder" to help boost the sales while "Hands" first single "Misery" is a moderate hit with #17 peak on the Hot 100 (and of course sales climate in 2007 is healthier compared to 2010).

A little bonus this week! I will share to you this week's TOP 20 albums (with exact sales numbers!) on the Billboard 200 Albums Chart thanks to Pulse Music Board:
1 "You Get What You Give" - Zac Brown Band [153,402]

"Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars is back on top of the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart and will likely the Hot 100 for second week (full Hot 100 list to be posted tomorrow). Last week's chart topper "Only Girl (In The World)" by Rihanna drops to #3 this week. Bruno Mars' track sold 188,000 the first since May when #1 song sold less than 200K (coincidentally the last #1 to have below 200k sales was "Nothin on You" where Bruno Mars was featured).

Chart Recap 113 (Philippine Music Charts)

Before we proceed to this week's chart recap, let me explain some things first:
  • Jam 88.3's Top 10 Chart Attack and 93.9 iFm's i10 Countdown are no longer on air due to management decision (it sucks to lost not just one but two radio countdowns, I hope the management of those respective stations will still produce a countdown show on some form or another)
  • For those looking for charts from 103.5 Max FM and U92, 103.5 Max FM ceased operations last August and was replaced by Wow FM (they have no music countdown yet) and U92 ended their chart two months ago, it was supposed to return but did not happen because the station is actually folding up this September 30 (the new management for that station is from TV5 and they'll have an AM type of station on that frequency)
  • Charts from 90.7 Love Radio and 101.1 Yes FM are occasionally posted here because it depends on when will they update their top 10 list on their respective websites (they have no formal countdown shows)
  • Tambayan 101.9 does not have a countdown show but they post their weekly Top 20 songs on their multiply site every Monday.

Anyway off to this week's chart recap of weekly music charts from Mega Manila Radio Stations and Music Channels (to see daily and provincial charts please visit The Philippine Music Charts Thread at Pinoyexchange.com)

Goodbye CDs and Record Bars?

I don't know when exactly the remaining branches of Music One in Glorietta and Greenbelt closed down but I was really shocked two weeks ago when I see BOTH branches closed already. I was about to blog this earlier but forgot about it but last Friday I saw National Book Store occupying Music One's former space in Glorietta so it reminded me of this sad development. I know their business has been doing not so well the last few years as evident with the "shrinking" of their once huge shops but I never thought it will really close shop. I was thinking at least one could have survived. It's just sad to see an era ending right before my eyes. I remember the days when Music One shops were still Tower Records how huge their shops are and how wide the selection of their titles. Although I rarely buy there before because they don't sell cassette tapes and tapes were the one I can afford back in the day. Even though I don't play them anymore (and some of my choices then are embarassing now haha) I still cherish my cassette tapes. It's a time capsule.
I'm not a big buyer of CDs because it's expensive, the last CD I bought was Lifehouse's latest album Smokes & Mirrors at Music One Glorietta, I only buy CDs from artist I really like. And this, along with the Internet where you can find music for free, is probably the reason why CD sales are down. When cassette tapes died there were no longer a cheaper alternative for music buyers and CD sales are just way too expensive for a regular person like me. Although Odyssey,Astrovision/Astroplus and SM Record Bars are still surviving but the CD selection are now limited and they mostly sell VCDs/DVDs. How I wish CDs were cheaper like cassette tapes before. Nevertheless, despite the easy access to music through the Internet and the rise of mp3 players, I still feel strongly about having a physical, tangible copy of a record. There's nothing like opening the CD/tape for the first time, smelling the inlay, looking at the artworks and photos, reading the "Thank Yous" and singing along with the lyrics. I don't know if I'm just really sentimental and refuses to let things go but I hope there will be a way for CDs to survive because imagining that one day the music CDs will be obsolete makes me really sad.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: Oct. 2, 2010)

As I posted yesterday Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" tops this week's Billboard Hot 100 (with issue date: October 2, 2010). This has been a mixed week for Mars as he was arrested for cocaine possession earlier this week (which personally I was disappointed since I really like the guy). Rihanna's bid for her 8th #1 (6 #1s as lead artist and 2 #1 as featured) is off to a good start as, "Only Girl (In The World), her first single from her upcoming album "Loud" zooms from #75 to #3 this week. It could pose a threat to Bruno Mars next week so let's see.

Haven't heard of Far East Movement? Me too! But their song "Like A G6" enters the top 10 this week. It's not surprising though because the song is a party anthem and this is kind of music that is hot on US these days. I could see sticking for a while on the chart and may go Top 5.

The VMA performance pushed Florence + The Machine's "Dog Days Are Over" from #93 to #21 this week. Dang! It almost made top 20! This would be the likely peak for the song since it's already down in iTunes but still glad a lot of people were exposed how good this song is. And who knows maybe it could earn Grammy nods, it's the type of music the Grammy voters like in general.

Right next to "Dog Days Are Over", Neon Light's "Animal" is at #22, I'm rooting for this song to go top 20. Meanwhile, with the help of the #1 debut of their new album, Linkin Park's lead single "The Catalyst" jumps to #27 from #73 last week surpassing its original peak when it debuted at #35 seven weeks ago. This is no "What I've Done" which peaked at #7 but "The Catalyst" did hit #1 on the Billboard Rock charts but it does not have crossover appeal which may be the reason why Linkin Park's new album did not sell that much as expected (I do like the song)

The top debut this week comes from Kings of Leon with "Radioactive" the lead single from their upcoming album as it bows at #37, this is already their second highest charting single after "Use Somebody" which peaked at #4.

Last week I mentioned how the two Train singles sit right next to each other which seems like a "passing of the torch" but alas they both nine notches this week with "Hey, Soul Sister" at #42 and "If It's Love" at #43

Longest staying song "Need You Now" is nearing the exit as it drops to #47 and The Script's "Breakeven' stays at #50 for the second week. Both songs will likely drop next week as Glee tracks would storm the charts next week.

Bruno Mars unseats Katy Perry for Hot 100 #1

Despite dropping on the Billboard's Digital Songs Chart from #1 to #2 this week, "Just The Way You Are" by Bruno Mars still managed to top this week's Billboard Hot 100 as reported by Billboard. Mars' debut single dislodges two-week champ "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry which drops all the way to #4 this week. Rihanna's "Only Girl (In The World)" soared to #3 this week from #75 the previous week as it enters the Hot Digital Songs chart at #1 selling 249,000 copies while her collaboration with Eminem "Love The Way You Lie" remains at #2 this week. Here is the rest of the top 10 (full chart rankings will be posted tomorrow):
  1. Just the Way You Are - Bruno Mars
  2. Love the Way You Lie - Eminem & Rihanna
  3. Only Girl (In The World) - Rihanna
  4. Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
  5. DJ Got Us Fallin In Love - Usher & Pitbull
  6. Dynamite - Taio Cruz
  7. I Like It - Enrique Iglesias & Pitbull
  8. Just a Dream - Nelly
  9. Club Can't Handle Me - Flo Rida & David Guetta
  10. Like a G6 - Far East Movement feat Catar

Meanwhile, here are the top 10 best selling songs on the Hot Digital Songs Chart this week (thanks to Yahoo! Chart Watch
  1. Only Girl (In The World) - Rihanna (249K)
  2. Just the Way You Are - Bruno Mars (194K)
  3. DJ Got Us Fallin In Love - Usher & Pitbull (171K)
  4. Teenage Dream - Katy Perry (164K)
  5. Just a Dream - Nelly (155K)
  6. Love the Way You Lie - Eminem & Rihanna (148K)
  7. Like a G6 - Far East Movement feat Catar (137K)
  8. Club Can't Handle Me - Flo Rida & David Guetta(132K)
  9. Dynamite - Taio Cruz(131K)
  10. I Like It - Enrique Iglesias & Pitbull (131K)
Linkin Park's fourth album "A Thousand Suns" debuted at #1 on this week's Billboard 200 Albums Chart selling 241,000 copies this week. Their last album "Minutes to Midnight" sold 623,00 copies in 2007 so the first week sales of "Suns" is somewhat disappointing for Linkin Park although album sales are way down this year compared in 2007 and lead single "The Catalyst" was not a big hit as "Midnight"'s lead single "What I've Done". A close #2 was Trey Songz' fourth album "Passion, Pain and Pleasure" which sold 240,000 copies this week. While Linkin Park saw a steep drop on their first week sales for their new album, Trey Songz experienced the opposite as "Passion, Pain and Pleasure" opening week sales is the biggest of his career his previous album "Ready" sold 131,000 on its first week in September 2009, it was then his biggest sales week. Love him or hate him but 2010 is definitely Justin Bieber's year, his "My World 2.0" album spends its 26th consecutive week inside the top 10 of the Billboard 200. Since it debuted 26 weeks ago, "My World 2.0 has never charted below the top 10 and the last album to do that? Eminem's The Eminem Show in 2002! Last week's #1 Sarah Bareilles' "Kaleidoscope Heart" crashes to #12 this week tying B.o.B's "The Adventures of Bobby Ray" 'record' of the biggest tumble from #1 on the Billboard this year.

Anyway here are the rest of the top 10 for this week's Billboard 200 Albums Chart:
  1. Linkin Park - "A thousand Suns" -- 241K
  2. Trey Songz - "Passion, Pain & Pleasure," -- 240K
  3. Eminem - "Recovery" -- 89K
  4. Jamey Johnson - "The Guitar Song" -- 63K
  5. Robert Plant - "Band of Joy" -- 49K
  6. Weezer - "Hurley" - 45K
  7. "NOW 35" -- 41K
  8. Brandon Flowers - "Flamingo" -- 41K
  9. Katy Perry - "Teenage Dream" -- 40K
  10. Justin Bieber - "My World 2.0" -- 36K

Midweek Musings 7

* Yesterday was Canon's Winter Wonderland, trade launch of their new products at the Edsa Shangri-La. The company I'm working for organized the event (our second one for Canon) and well I'm proud to say we pulled it off despite some problems (which is normal). It was my first to be inside a five star hotel and I must say I love the ambiance but unbelievable prices for their services! Like we had to print something and we found out they charge 54 pesos per page! I mean I know everything there is expensive but 54 PESOS per page on a normal bond paper? Overpriced is an understatement. Anyway, back to the event I love the production design aside from the Christmas themed-stage we also had "specialty booths" where each product is displayed, we had a Culinary booth, an Alice in Wonderland booth, Fairies, Videoke and many more. My main role for this event was the same with what I did with the first one, wrote the script and assisted host which is once DJ Scarlet of 99.5 RT. She's really a good host, some of her spiels were rushed because of some last minute changes but she still hosted with ease. And she's very, very nice and pretty of course :D EDSA Shangri-La provided some complimentary food items and I took one box to bring home to my family and they loved it :)

*I will visit my alma matter, DLSU-Dasmariñas this coming Monday to attend the opening of Heraldo Filipino's 25th Anniversary Exhibit. I'm really proud that I was part of HF, I learned so many things there that really made a huge impact in my life. I'm looking forward to this visit. I miss HF so much (and my college life for that matter). :)

* Fall TV Season in the US just started and I'm excited to see the new shows and of course the return of my favorites. Aside from the shows itself, I also love monitoring the ratings for this shows. Thanks to TV By The Numbers I became obsessed with US TV Ratings.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: Sept. 25, 2010)

"Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry remains on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a second straight week but next week it will face stiff competition with Bruno Mars' Just The Way You Are, the current #1 in Hot Digital Songs and Rihanna's "Only Girl", which debuts this week at #75, that is reported to sell at least 200 thousand and with a rising radio airplay, it could possibly pull an upset and leap to #1 next week,

It will be definitely an interesting chart battle next week!

Elsewhere on the chart, Flo Rida earns his first top 10 hit since "Sugar" in 2009 as "Club Can't Handle Me" rises to #9. As I mentioned yesterday, this is a sleeper hit for Flo Rida as compared to his previous first singles "Low" and "Right Round" which both hit #1 for a number weeks and where really strong out of the gate.

Sarah Bareilles topped the Billboard 200 with her sophomore set "Kaleidoscope Heart" and it also helped the lead single "King of Anything" jump from #51 to #32 this week. Train's singles are right next to each other as "Hey, Soul Sister" (50 weeks on the chart) drops to #33 while "If It's Love" climbs to #34, passing of the torch? Let's see

Could this be the last week for Lady Antebellum "Need You Now"? The song which is on its 57th week on the chart drops to #46 and as per Billboard charts rules once a song that has charted for more than 20 weeks drops below #50 it automatically drops out and enter the recurrents chart. Nevertheless, "Need You Now" enjoyed a strong run on the Hot 100 and almost hit #1 but was thwarted by Taio Cruz's Break Your Heart (which drops to #48 this week, 29 weeks on the chart) early this year. With it's strong chart run and longevity, it's one of the front runners to top Billboard's Year-end chart later this year.

Florence + The Machine's Dog Days Are Over debuts at #93 this week but expect a huge leap next as the song is currently on the top 10 of the US iTunes digital songs chart thanks to Florence's VMA performance last Sunday.

Sarah Bareilles and Bruno Mars lead Billboard Charts

Sarah Bareilles' and Bruno Mars top this week's Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot Digital Songs, respectively. Bareilles' scores here first #1 with her well-reviewed second album "Kaleidoscope Heart" entering the Billboard 200 at #1 selling 90,000 as reported by Billboard.com. Her first album "Little Voice" was a sleeper hit, it debuted at #45 but with the help of her hit song "Love Song" it managed to have a #7 peak and it's just now 3,000 copies shy of hitting the 1 million sales mark. On the other hand, Bruno Mars tops Billboard's Digital Songs Chart with "Just The Way You Are" selling 209,000 copies this week dethroning last week's #1 "Teenage Dream" by Katy Perry although it's still the #1 song on the Hot 100 while "Just The Way You Are" jumps to #3 as reported by Paul Grein from Yahoo! Chart Watch (full results of Hot 100 to be posted tomorrow). This is the second time Mars hit the top spot on the Hot Digital Songs chart, first was one was for B.o.B's "Nothin' on You" where Mars was a featured artist. I have a strong feeling "Just The Way You Are" will be his second (and first as a solo) #1 on the Hot 100.

Taylor Swift's 2008 and Grammy Award winning album "Fearless" has sold 6 million copies this week, the first album to hit that sales mark since 2005's "Some Hearts" by Carrie Underwood and with the state of album sales right it could be the last one too (hopefully not!)

Flo Rida's "Club Can't Handle Me" jumps to #8 from #11 this week on the Hot Digital Songs chart, this song is finally gaining steam on the digital sales. I thought this song would flop since it did not start well and Flo Rida's first singles from his first two albums "Low" and "Right Round" was a hit out of the gate and were breaking digital sales records. Although obviously "Club Can't Handle Me" is not a monster hit compared to the first two it's shaping up to be another hit and I'm glad because personally I think this is better than "Low" and "Right Round".

Full

Just got home from a family outing in Nagcarlan, Laguna then later on Tagaytay (because it was already on the way home so why not visit it too right?) We visited their church there and strolled for a while. It was really good that I was able to unwind with my family this weekend because work will be hectic! We have another event to organize on September 21 and it will be held on a five star hotel (it will be my first time to enter a five star hotel actually). This event is harder to produce than the first one we did for Canon because there are more details and it's a grander event so it's really a BIG challenge for us. I'm tasked to do the event script once again which is in my favor because I like writing scripts anyway and my task on the day itself will be assisting the event host (which is DJ Scarlet formerly of 103.5 Max FM and now 99.5 RT). Aside from the event I still have the dubbing scripts to write for of course. We have a new telenovela project "Mar de Amor" to write for because the current show we are writing "En Nombre Del Amor" is almost done already (I also occasionally write for the other projects when the need arises). Then we have this health infomercial that we will work on too. And last and definitely not the least is that we have the concert of Ogie Alcasid and Ryan Cayabyab on October. Anyway, thank God we have lots of projects to do, it will be hectic but hey this is good for us because our jobs are secured :D But despite my busy work schedule, I will try my best to update the blog (especially the chart related posts :)

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: Sept. 18, 2010)

As I previewed yesterday Katy Perry's Teenage Dream ended the #1 run of Love The Way You Lie on this week's Billboard Hot 100. Nelly earns hist first top 10 single after 2006's Grillz which hit #1. Chris Brown earns his first top 20 hit after the "Rihanna beating" scandal two years ago as Deuces climbs to #19. OneRepublic's Secrets and Neon's Animal both enters Top 30 this week, I hope both songs could manage to have a peak inside the top 20. The longest staying on the chart "Need You Now" drops to #38, 12 chart numbers away to recurrent status. Train's Hey Soul Sister drops to #32 but second single If It's Love climbs to #44, passing of the baton soon?. The Script's Breakeven climbs from #50 #47 this week on its 40th week on chart, fending off recurrent status this week. There are only three new entries this week and the highest debut is actually at #95 with George Strait's The Breath You Take, the other two new entries are country songs as well from Miranda Lambert and Brad Praisley. There is only one re-entry this week at #99 with Gyptian's Hold You. A solid and competitive chart action this week. Here is the full Hot 100 thanks to Charly 1300 Forums

'Teenage Dream' tops Billboard Hot 100!

Even though Katy Perry's sophomore album "Teenage Dream" drops to #4 from #1 last week all is not lost as the title track dethrones the seven-week champ "Love The Way You Lie" by Eminem and Rihanna on the Billboard Hot 100 this week (with issue date September 18, 2010) as reported by Billboard.com. Coincidentally, "Love The Way You Lie" took over Katy Perry's six-week #1 song "California Gurls" on the Hot 100's top spot so they just took turns! Here is the list of this week's top 10 (full list of the Hot 100 will be posted tomorrow).
  1. Teenage Dream - Katy Perry
  2. Love The Way You Lie - Eminem feat Rihanna
  3. Dynamite - Taio Cruz
  4. Just The Way You Are - Bruno Mars (I'm rooting for this song to be the next #1)
  5. I Like It - Enrique Iglesias feat Pitbull
  6. DJ Got Us Fallin' In Love - Usher feat Pitbull
  7. Mine - Taylor Swift
  8. Take It Off - Ke$ha
  9. Just a Dream - Nelly
  10. California Gurls - Katy Perry feat Snoop Dog
Meanwhile here is top 10 in the Hot Digital Songs Chart courtesy of Paul Grein from Yahoo! Chart Watch

  2. Just the Way You Are - Bruno Mars (175,000)
  3. Dynamite - Taio Cruz (165,000)
  4. Love the Way You Lie - Eminem Ft. Rihanna (156,000)
  5. DJ Got Us Fallin' in Love - Usher Ft. Pitbull (136,000)
  6. I Like It - Enrique Iglesias Ft. Pitbull (129,000)

Disturbed earned their fourth consecutive #1 as their album "Asylum" debuts this week on the Billboard 200 chart selling 179,00. Another notable debut is popular late 70s/80s band 'Heart' (of "Alone" fame) scoring their first top 10 album since 1990 with the debut of "Red Velvet Car" at #10 this week. Postscript: What I love about Paul Grein's Chart Watch column is that he answers fan inquiries about sales of songs/albums, old or new. One of the questions raised to him this week is an update of the sales of Green Day's 2009 album 21st Century Breakdown and he said that as of this week it already sold 989,000. I'm so glad that is just 11,000 copies away from hitting the 1 million mark because I would really want this album to hit that sales mark although it was not as popular as American Idiot (it produced two smash hits "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends"), 21st Century Breakdown is still a good album and it did produce one hit single with 21 Guns (although not as successful as 'Boulevard' and 'Wake Me Up..' at least in the US as the song was a huge hit here in the Philippines)
