My 53rd Grammy Awards Nominations Predictions

The announcement of the 53rd Grammy Awards nominations will be out tomorrow, December 1 ,so I'm sharing my predictions on what I think could be nominated on some categories, I emphasized on some because there are a lot of categories so I just chose the categories that I like to cast my predictions with. My predictions are based on buzz on music forums such as Pulse Music Board and Gold Derby and I threw in some "darkhorse" predictions as well. Anyway, for those who didn't knew the Grammy people chose nominees from a list of submitted songs/artists/albums that are qualified because they are released/popular within the eligibility period. This year the eligibility period was from September 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010. The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards will be held on February 13, 2011. Here are my predictions :)

Spotlight: ABC's "Better With You"

ABC's new sitcom "Better With You" started out okay, it's not that bad but the reviews were basically saying that the sitcom is not the worst thing out there but it's an old-fashioned show, something that could have come out in the 90s. And part of the show's "old fashioned" style is that it has an opening theme which I totally like because very few US TV shows these days have theme songs and I don't know about other people but for me a good theme song helps establish a show's identity. The show's theme song is also titled "Better With You" and it is sung by indie artist Ben Kweller. You could check out the full song below and what's great is that you can actually it download the song for FREE and better yet it's a LEGAL download because it's from ABC's official website [it's available even from peopleoutside the US, just great]! Just visit Ben Kweller's page on ABC's website here and scroll down below and you'll see the DOWNLOAD NOW icon and click away!

As for the show itself, I like the pilot although I wasn't as drawn to it like when I saw the pilots of Modern Family, The Middle, and Cougar Town. I found the first couple of episodes amusing but not totally funny or compelling but the cast were so good that it still made me watch the show. But the latest episode, the Thanksgiving one, was so good on all aspects, writing, acting, comedy timing, everything clicked and I'm now totally on board for this show! The ratings are just mediocre but we still got a full season and hopefully a second season is possible. Let's wait and see.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: December 4, 2010)

Rihanna scored her 9th #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Only Girl" just two weeks after earning her 8th #1 with "What's My Name". This is quite a unique case as Rihanna's second single reached the #1 spot first before the lead single of her new album. "What's My Name" benefited from strong first week sales that catapulted it on top while "Only Girl" airplay lead was the main reason it towered over its competitors to reach the top. This is Rihanna's 4th #1 for 2010 (Rude Boy & Love The Way You Lie were the first two) and she's the first artist to have 4 #1 hits in a calendar year since Usher in 2004 when he scored back to back to back #1 hits with "Yeah!", "Burn", "Confessions Part II" and her duet with Alicia Keys "My Boo". Coincidentally, Rihanna ties Usher's Hot 100 #1 haul. Elton John and The Bee Gees also had 9 Hot 100 #1 hits. Here are the following artists who have 10+ #1 hits:

20- The Beatles
18- Mariah Carey
17- Elvis Presley
13- Michael Jackson
12- Madonna
12- The Supremes
11- Whitney Houston
10- Janet Jackson
10- Stevie Wonder

At 22, Rihanna could potentially earn more #1 hits. 2010 has been a good year for Rihanna compared to a year ago, she had no #1 hit or even a top 5 with her songs "Russian Roulette" and "Hard" receiving lukewarm reception.

Elsewhere on the top 10, Pink's "Raise Your Glass" jumps to #2, it has a chance to top the Hot 100 next week, if that happens that be Pink's 3rd #1 song after "So What" and the collaboration "Lady Marmalade" with Christina Aguilera, Mya, and Lil Kim. Last week's #1 Far East Movement's "Like A G6" drops to #3, Ke$ha's "We R Who We R" climbs to #4 while Nelly's "Just a Dream" stays at #5. Katy Perry's "Fireworks" is up from #9 to #6 this week, it's currently the #1 song on US iTunes which means it has a great chance to be Katy's Perry 3rd straight #1 from her new album and 4th #1 over all. Bruno Mars' "Just The Way You Are" and "What's My Name" drops to #7 and #8 while "Bottoms Up" by Trey Songz is a non-mover at #10. Where's #9? Read below :)

***

Cee Lo Green's "F*ck You (Forget You)" already lost steam and was dropping on the charts the past weeks but thanks to the Glee exposure, the combined sales of the clean and explicit version catapulted the song's sales through the roof paving the way for it to jump to #9 this week. On the other hand, Glee's cover of Green's "Forget You" settles for #11 instead but this is the 3rd highest peaking Glee track after "Don't Stop Believin'"(#4) and last week's top debut "Teenage Dream" (#8) which drops to #36 this week. Only one other Glee track enters the chart this week, the mash up "Singing in The Rain / Umbrella" debuts at #18. Both covers of "Forget You" and "Singing in The Rain / Umbrella" feature lead vocals from actress Gwyneth Paltrow. Paltrow had a 2000 song "Crusin" with Huey Lewis, it was a hit here in the Philippines but it did not chart at all on the Hot 100.

***

Bruno Mars scores his 4th straight Top 20 hit (after "Nothin on You", "Billionaire" and her own "Just The Way You Are") as her second single "Grenade" zooms from #30 to #17, the track is currently in the iTunes Top 10 and with rising airplay to boot, I wouldn't be surprised if this will be another top 5 hit for the guy, his career is currently on fire right now.

"Airplanes" by B.o.B featuring Hayley Williams dropped out on this week's chart after 30 weeks. Also bowing out are Mike Posner's "Please Don't Go" (29 weeks) and Katy Perry's #1 smash "California Gurls" (27 weeks). With all those long running songs saying adieu, the longest chart sitter is now Enrique Iglesias' "I Like It" which spends its 28th week on the chart. The song is a non-mover at #21 this week and I think it still has 4 to 8 weeks left on the chart. Let's wait and see.

How I wish OneRepublic's "Secrets" finally enters the top 20, it peaked at #21 a couple of weeks back, it climbs back to #24 from #26 last week. I'm also hoping for Plain White Ts "Rhythm of Love" (#66) and Mumford & Sons "Little Lion Man" (#68) will break in to the Top 40 eventually. Another song I like Train's "Marry Me" debuts at #95 this week. Florence + The Machine's "Dogs Days Are Over" peaked at #21 thanks to her 2010 VMA Performance, she performed on Saturday Night Live last week and it brought some more chart life to the song as it climbs from #89 to #69 this week. Here's hoping the song will have another leash on its chart life.

Rihanna Lands 9th #1, Glee & Boyle Stay Atop Charts

Updated: Posted this week's top 20 albums on the Billboard 200

It was only two weeks ago when Rihanna scored her 8th #1 with "What's My Name", her second single from her new album "Loud", due to strong first week sales and I thought then that it was making up for the lead single "Only Girl (In The World)" failing to top the Hot 100 but well after closely making it last week, "Only Girl" finally top the Hot 100 this week as reported by Billboard. This is Rihanna's 9th #1 and 4th #1 this year. It was a tight race for #1 between "Only Girl" and Pink's "Raise Your Glass" but the former's commanding lead on airplay towered over Pink's track which settles for #2 this week on the Hot 100, it still has a chance to top the Hot 100 next week though. Here is this week's Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 (full chart will be posted tomorrow plus more chart comments)

1. Rihanna - "Only Girl (In the World)"
2. P!nk - "Raise Your Glass"
3. Far East Movement feat. The Cataracs and Dev - "Like a G6"
4. Ke$ha - "We R Who We R"
5. Nelly - "Just a Dream"
6. Katy Perry - "Firework"
7. Bruno Mars - "Just the Way You Are"
8. Rihanna feat Drake - "What's My Name?"
9. Cee Lo Green - "F**k You (Forget You)"
10. Trey Songz feat Nicki Minaj - "Bottoms Up"

Almost making it to the top 10 is Glee's cover of Cee Lo Green's "Forget You" which enters the Hot 100 at #11. The cover featured the vocals of Oscar-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow who was the guest star of last week's episode. Glee's cover of "Forget You" sold 192k this week topping the Hot Digital Songs chart this week and it's also the second highest first week sales of any Glee track next to last week's #1 "Teenage Dream" which sold 214K last week (but drops to #19 this week as expected for Glee tracks). This is the second week in a row that Glee topped the Hot Digital Songs chart but it is interesting to note that both covers of "Teenage Dream" and "Forget You" featured vocals from someone not on the regular cast. In a matter of two weeks, Glee's cover of "Don't Stop Believin" went from the #1 to #3 on the list of top selling first-week sales of Glee tracks, a record it held for over a year (it sold 177K in May 2009). Time will tell if the Glee's covers of "Teenage Dream" and "Forget You" would surpass "Don't Stop Believin" over all sales which is over a million and by far the best selling Glee track to date. Another Glee track from last week's episode sold well., their mash up of "Singing in the Rain" and "Umbrella" enters the Hot Digital Songs track at #7 selling 140K.

Thanks to the Glee exposure Cee Lo Green's "F*ck You (Forget You)" soared from #12 to #2 on the Hot Digital Songs chart selling 191K and helping it land in the Top 10 on the Hot 100. Billboard counted both the sales for the original 'explicit' version and the 'radio-friendly' version into one so that's why even though neither version cracked the Top 3 on iTunes last week (the largest share of the digital songs sales) the combined sales were enough to land in the top 2. But they are basically the some song with a one word difference.

Here is this week's Top 10 on the Hot Digital Songs chart courtesy of Paul Grein's Yahoo! Chart Watch
  1. Glee Cast - "Forget You" (192K)
  2. Cee Lo Green - "F*ck You / Forget You" (191K)
  3. Ke$ha - "We R Who We R" (189K)
  4. Katy Perry - "Firework" (175K)
  5. P!nk - "Raise Your Glass" (171K)
  6. Rihanna - "What's My Name?" (147K)Numbered List
  7. Glee Cast - "Singin' in The Rain/Umbrella" (140K)
  8. The Black Eyed Peas - "Time (The Dirty Bit)" (170K)
  9. Rihanna - "Only Girl (In The World)" (131K)
  10. Far*East Movement feat. Cataracs & Dev - "Like A G6" (130K)

A total of 8 new album storms in on the Top 10 of this week's Billboard 200 albums but Susan Boyle remained unbeatable as her holiday album "The Gift" spends a second week at #1 atop the chart selling 355K this week. The Gift's sales are up 5% from last week when it debuted with 318K, it's a rare feat for an album to increase in sales from its debut week. Leading the pack of new entries is 10-year old Jackie Evancho with her holiday set "O Holy Night" debuting at #2 selling 239K. Evancho is a runner up from this year's America's Got Talent and at 10 years old, she is the youngest person to land a top 10 album, the previous record holder was the late Michael Jackson. Jackson was 11 years old when Jackson 5 land their first top 10 album. Far below. Let's see if fellow 10 year old Willow Smith, who already made splash this year with her single "Whip My Hair", could land a top 10 album next year. At #3 is Rihanna's 4th studio album "Loud" which sold 207K, the highest first week sales for any Rihanna album. Rihanna has 9 #1 songs on the Hot 100 but she has yet have a #1 album, her highest peaking album was Good Girl Gone Bad at #2. The next set of new entries in the top 10 are comprised of Josh Groban's "Illuminations" (#4), Kid Rock's "Born Free" (#5), Rascall Flatt's "Nothing Like This" (#6), Keith Urban's "Get Closer) (#7), Glee's "Glee The Music: The Christmas Album" (#8) and Nelly's "5.0" (#10). Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" is the only other leftover from last week's top 10 ,it lands at #9. All but the #10 album outsold the albums on the same positions last year and over all sales are up from last year for the first time this year! There's a wide sales gap from the #9 album (146K) to #10 album (64K) though. Nelly's sales are disappointing considering he has a hit this time with "Just a Dream" and is an established artist, it would have been great if all the top 10 albums sold 100K+. This year's American Idol winner Lee DeWyze debuted at #19 selling 39K, somewhere Kris Allen is happy as someone took his "record" of lowest selling first week sales of an Idol winner. Allen's self-titled first album debuted and peaked at #11 last year selling~80K. Lastly, Eminem's "Recovery" is the first album to sell 3 million copies this year, unless Susan Boyle (or any other album) will suddenly sell ~500K a week until December, "Recovery" is on course to be 2010's Top Seller. I will update this post if any Billboard 200 sales chart for this week are posted on Pulse Music Board already so watch out :)

Midweek Musings 8

* Very hectic work load these days for me. Aside from writing dubbing scripts, I was also assigned to write copy for an upcoming hotel's website and AVP. It was really difficult I must say since I'm not confident if I could write a good copy for selling the hotel but anyway I was still to produce outputs and waiting for the approval of the client. I hope it will be approved with only minimal revisions (if would be great if none!). The hotel is actually located in Baguio and we might go there next month to shoot materials for the AVP. If things pushes through, this will be my second time to visit the City of Pines, first was back in 2005 when I was one of the chosen from Heraldo Filipino to attend OSSEI Campus Journalism seminar-workshop. I really enjoyed my trip so hopefully everything pushes through :)

*Tonight's winning numbers for the Grand Lotto 6/55: 4-41-40-55-42-45. And with a grand prize of 633.9 Million, this was really a most watched raffle but alas NO ONE WON AGAIN! Well, I'll bet a make next time haha. Seriously, I hope a lot of people will win the grand prize next prize because if one will only win, I will be afraid for his or her safety, that's a lot of money and this is a highly watched Lotto season. Anyway, I hope the eventual winner/s deserve/s it and will make the money to good use. If I will be to place a bet, I'll he happy if get four numbers only with a prize 2,000 pesos seriously haha :D

* 31 Days to go before Christmas! Wow, it's almost near! I hope we can get our Christmas Bonus already haha. Anyway, I hope the weather will be a cooler soon, that's what I love about the holiday season and it's been really humid lately although there are rains at times. Times are really hard, few houses have Christmas decorations much less Christmas light these days.

Spotlight: Rosario

When I first saw the trailer of "Rosario" it gave me goosebumps. I have no idea what the story is all about but the trailer is really something, the cinematography and production is very impressive, the musical score is haunting and it looks like the film is well acted. The film is directed by actor Albert Martinez, I'm not sure if this is his first foray on directing but I'm already impressed with the trailer so I really can't wait to watch this film next month. It is one of the entries on the 2010 Metro Manila Film Festival and this film is produced by CinemaBuhay and Studio5 (the new movie arm of TV5). I hope the film will live up to the impressive trailer but I really have a strong feeling that this is indeed a good film. Let's see :)
