Spotlight: Disney-Pixar's Brave

Well, Cars 2 was a solid movie but it's really disappointing by Pixar standards but I hope Disney-Pixar will redeem themselves next year with their next movie "Brave" which is set in Scottish medieval times, something new for Pixar! I admit the trailer felt like "How To Train Your Dragon" but it is promising and I hope it lives up. It will be shown in the US June 2012 (and perhaps August or September here in the Philippines). I hope this movie would eliminate the bitter taste Cars 2 left this year

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: September 3, 2011)

Katy Perry's record-setting Last Friday Night spends a second week atop the Billboard Hot 100, the song will likely be dethroned next week* but still all of Perry's #1 hits stayed on top for more than a week. Party Rock Anthem stays at #2 while Lil Wayne's brand new song featuring Drake She Will bows at #3. It's the highest debut ever for Lil Wayne and his second highest ranking song on the chart after the #1 hits Lollipop and Jay Sean's Down where he is featured.

*Its biggest threat is Maroon Five's Moves Like Jagger which drops to #4 this week but is currently on top of the US iTunes chart and rising in airplay rapidly.

The Band Perry's 39-week old single If I Die Young rises to #14 matching its peak position. The song is still hanging on near the top 10 for both sales and airplay, it still has a chance to gain another peak but a top 10 peak is somehow hard to do at this point.

Gym Class Heroes' Stereo Hearts feat Adam Levine rises to #15 this week which is the group's 2nd Top 20 hit after their 2006 hit Cupid's Chokehold. Meanwhile, it will likely jump to the top 10 next week because it's currently inside the top 5 of US iTunes.

Rihanna's Cheers flies #25-#17 this week landing her 22nd top 20 hit and is also vying to become her 11th #1 which she could possibly do with this song as it is currently ascending on both the sales and airplay front.

Dropping on the chart this week and going recurrent is Britney Spears' Til The World Ends which stayed the chart for 24 weeks managing a #3 peak. This is Britney's second longest staying song on the chart after her breakthrough single Baby One More Time which charted for 32 weeks.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Review: Cars 2

Last Saturday (August 20) I attended Cars 2's red carpet premiere at SM Mall of Asia IMAX theater for Pinoyexchange. Below is my Cars 2 review for Pinoyexchange's Official Movie Reviews. You can also check out my review of Final Destination 5 which I posted earlier.

So I went to watch Cars 2 with low expectations because of the massive negative reviews it received upon its release in the US. I love Pixar films and it was sad so to see that their streak of commercial and critical hits for over a decade ended with this movie (critically speaking only as the movie is still a bona fide blockbuster). I watched the movie with an open mind but the reviews were indeed right, Cars 2 is by a mile the weakest Pixar movie. With that said, the movie is still good enough because of its amazing animation, visual puns, and witty banter.

In Cars 2 tow truck Mater (Larry The Cable Guy) takes the center stage as Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) tags him along as he competes in an international race sponsored by Miles (Eddie Izzard), a business tycoon promoting alternative fuel. But due to Mater’s carefree nature he accidentally finds himself in the middle of a secret spy mission with British secret service agents Finn (Michael Caine) and Holly (Emily Mortimer).

Cars 2 is radically different from Cars in both structure and tone. While Cars take us on a gentle journey of appreciating the pleasures of slowing down, Cars 2 is a loud spy adventure with relentless energy. Lightning Queen which was the star of the first film was relegated to a supporting role to Mater and that for me is where the movie got it wrong. Mater is a fun character but only good in small doses but in this sequel he is the anchor of the story. His bumbling idiot shtick is lovable at first but becomes grating as it goes on although towards the end the character manages to redeem itself. The movie spent a lot of time with new characters as well and while they were interesting it would have been better if Lightning McQueen and the Radiator Springs folks had their shining moments because their presence was definitely missed in this movie.

The spy storyline is fascinating especially with its take on fuel conspiracy and corporate greed but I think it’s complicated for kids and got a little boring at some point. However, the way Pixar translated the spy action in this form was very impressive. The opening scene which is a standard spy movie action scene was flawless and gorgeous. Pixar also did a splendid job with the international race sequences as they gave vibrant and amusing interpretations of Japan, Italy, and London in the world of anthropomorphic cars. Moreover, they captured the world car racing atmosphere quite effectively here which I think would resonate well to race cars enthusiasts. Pixar is always good on details and those are clearly at work here. The 3D in the film is great thanks to the film's remarkable palette and well-structured designs.

What’s really missing with Cars 2 is an emotional attachment to the characters and their relationships. This is the only Pixar film that didn’t have that thought provoking moment that will pinch your heart. There’s an attempt to have that in this movie between Mater and Lightning McQueen but it didn’t work because the reason of their conflict was sloppily written, so when they had their realizations it felt disjointed and forced.

In hindsight, there’s actually a scene that I would consider a heart-tugging moment but it was short and not related to the core story. It was the scene addressing the absence of Doc Hudson (voiced by the late Paul Newman) . The approach was subtle and didn’t elaborate any details but it moved me because it was emotional but grounded. And I wish Cars 2 had that kind of poignancy overall.

All in all, Cars 2 is a visual treat with a fun adventure storyline but those hoping for Pixar’s brand of compelling characters and sharp storyline will be disappointed. 7 / 10

Review: Final Destination 5

So last week I attended two movie press screenings and it was really fun to have that privilege so thank you once again to my Pinoyexchange family. I'll share to you first my review for "Final Destination 5" which had its press screening last Thursday (August 18) at Glorietta. Later on my review for "Cars 2" will be posted. These reviews are published at Pinoyexchange's Official Movie Reviews

The Final Destination franchise was supposed to end with the last movie released two years ago which was officially titled "The Final Destination” but that movie exceeded box office expectations (thanks to the 3D gimmick which was fairly new to the audience back then) so the studio green lighted another sequel which offers more of the same thing but with some standout sequences that delivered the punches.

Final Destination 5 opens with Sam (Nicholas D'Agosto) and his officemates preparing for their company retreat and while on their way Sam sees a vision of a disastrous bridge collapse that would kill them all. Upon realizing that it was all a premonition, Sam tried to warn his officemates to leave the bus before they cross that bridge. His premonition came true and only 8 of them survived the tragedy. But they were not supposed to survive so “death” haunts them one by one.

So this movie basically follows the Final Destination template where you will see the survivors of the tragedy suffer from elaborate and ridiculous ways to die. So the key for this movie’s success is if the set pieces are exciting to watch. In this edition, two sequences delivered the thrills and those are the big bridge collapse catastrophe and the ghastly gymnasts’ go-around. The clear standout is the set piece involving the gymnasts which was masterfully executed and for that alone I would recommend this movie. That sequence was very keen with details and presented various ways that the victim could die which toying audience expectations. The director managed to heighten the suspense with every shot and the conclusion to that sequence was shocking but actually makes sense. The next sequences were a mixed bag: some like involving the massage started promising but petered out and the one involving the eye surgery was a hot mess. The movie is rated R13 but with no cuts so you would see the movie in its full g[l]ory.

The acting from the largely unknown cast is acceptable given how thin the material they are given. And as for seeing this on 3D, the bridge collapse tragedy was executed well for 3D use and the aforementioned gymnast sequence works too but the rest of the movie just didn’t click with the format (unless of course you look forward to spats of blood and disconnected body parts in your face then this movie has a lot of that to offer).

Final Destination 5 ends on a note that could finally conclude the franchise and it’s actually a clever way to end it (of course the franchise’s fate depends on the worldwide box office and I heard if this one makes enough money the six and seventh installments will be shot back to back). If you enjoyed the franchise (or at least a movie or two) then this movie is for you but this edition didn’t really inject a new life to the franchise but just presented another set of ways on how to die horribly. 6 / 10

Review: Way Back Home

The remake of "Mara Clara" was my guilty pleasure. I know the story became so ridiculous but the cast really won me over so I stayed all the way to end. The girls who played Mara and Clara, Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes, were really good with their roles and they helped make the adaptation of the classic 90s soap leave a big impact on Philippine pop culture as well. Star Cinema cashed in with the success of the soap by producing a movie to serve as a star vehicle for the young actresses and the result is a good acting piece for both girls although the movie itself is at best mediocre.

“Way Back Home” tells the story of sisters Jessica (Montes) and Joanna (Bernardo) who got separated when they were very young during a family vacation. The family never found Joanna until twelve years after when during a swimming competition their mother (Agot Isidro) recognized her long-lost daughter Joanna as one of the competitors. After being separated for so long the sisters struggle to adjust with their new lives.

The premise is interesting but the screenplay didn’t fully explore it enough and just went to the melodramatic route too quickly. Montes elevated a character that is sloppily written, Jessica has a lot of dramatic moments in the movie but I felt like her angst was not developed properly. It’s normal to feel uneasy (or in Filipino vernacular “mailang”) to someone you were close to once but got separated for so long that you are practically strangers already however you don’t act like a bitch to that person immediately. I think a cold treatment from Jessica would have been a more natural starting point of their reunion. With that said, Montes did a good job on relaying the pent-up emotions her character has been keeping all these years. It’s a showy character but Montes managed to keep it grounded and relatable.

On the other hand, Bernardo is effective with the low key but moving scenes of Joanna. Bernardo’s eyes are very expressive and were used effectively with a number of scenes like her confusion of whether to stay with the family she grew up with or to go with her real family, her frustration over her sister and the scene where she was recounting an early memory she had with her sister Jessica was poignant and touching

The supporting characters were not used that well like what’s the point of having an older brother (Aaron Villena) when the yaya had more lines than him. Agot Isidro had her moments but her character’s issues were not fleshed out. The romantic interests (Sam Concepcion and Enrique Gil) were just on the sidelines so they were not distractions because the movie after all is a family drama.

I have to give kudos to the musical score because it was lovely and gave the movie an emotional resonance. I admit I almost teared up during the flashbacks when the sisters got separated and that aforementioned scene where Joanna recalled an early memory she shared with her sister, the entrance of the flashback and music score was spot on that made the scene quite moving.

Script nuisances aside, “Way Back Home” is a solid light family drama plus it’s rare to have a local mainstream movie these days that isn’t about a romance, horror or comedy so "Way Back Home" is a welcome change of pace. 7 / 10

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: August 27, 2011)

And Katy Perry finally did it! Last Friday Night unseats LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem to claim this weeks Billboard Hot 100 top spot and at the same time setting the record for the very first solo female artist to have all five singles from the same album go to #1. She's also the second solo artist to achieve that record after Michael Jackson did that with his album "Bad" in 1987. Katy Perry's #1 singles are California Girls, Teenage Dream, Firework, E.T and now Last Friday Night while Michael Jackon's #1 hits from that album were I Just Can't Stop Loving You, Bad, The Way You Make Me Feel, Man In The Mirror and Dirty Diana. Last Friday Night finally made it to the top spot thanks to release of the remix featuring Missy Eliott but unlike Rihanna's S&M remix which featured and credited Britney Spears when the song push it to the top spot, Missy Elliott is not credited for this #1 hit because the sales for the remix are below the original and per Billboard rules the featured artist on a remix will only be credited on the chart if they outsold the original during the given chart week.

Maroon Five and Christina Aguilera's Moves Like Jagger climbs #8-#3 giving the band their second highest peaking song after their #1 hit Makes Me Wonder in 2007 and Aguilera her first top 5 song after Beautiful peaked at #2 in 2002. The song has a great chance of topping the chart as it is currently selling well with rising airplay to boot.

Personal favorite Pumped Up Kicks enters the top 10 this week at #8. The song is currently #3 on US iTunes and will likely break the top 20 on the airplay chart in the succeeding so expect this song to go as high as #4 or #5 next week.

Adele's Rolling in the Deep exits the top 10 this week after spending 19 weeks on the top portion of the chart. Meanwhile her second official single Someone Like You inches up to #51 this week. While it would be tough thing to surpass or even match Rolling in the Deep's success, Adele's second single is climbing on the sales and airplay chart plus she will likely perform this song on the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards which could likely boost this song even more. Let's wait and see

This week's top debut is Headlines from Drake which enters the chart at #13. This is the rapper's first single from his upcoming album . He will also be the top debut again next week as he is the featured act on Lil Wayne's new song She Will which is currently atop the US iTunes.

The Band Perry's If I Die Young slids to #15 this week on its 38th week on the chart. The song is still chugging along on the sales and airplay component but is struggling to break inside the top 10. If it manages to enter the top 10 anytime soon it would be one (if not) the longest climb to the top 10. I hope this song makes it, the song certainly didn't die young on the charts.

Rihanna's Cheers zooms #50-#25 this week, easily surpassing the #37 peak of her previous single California King Bed which drops all the way #60-#81 this week

Evanescence returns to the Hot 100 this week as their new single What You Want enters the chart at #68. The last song from Evanescence that made it on the Hot 100 was Call Me When You're Sober which peaked at #10 in 2006.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Review: Crazy Stupid Love

I had the chance to catch the press screening of "Crazy Stupid Love" last Thursday (August 11,2011) at Power Plant Mall thanks to Pinoyexchange. You will also see this review at Pinoyexchange's Official Movie Reviews thread.

Crazy Stupid Love showcases an array of characters with their own love issues building up a strong story that resonates to everyone’s (mis)adventures with this crazy stupid thing we call love.

Cal (Steve Carell) and Emily (Julianne Moore) married early and had been together since they were in high school. Cal got the surprise of his life when during a dinner Emily drops a bomb: she wants a divorce. And to make matters even worst, Emily revealed that she slept with her co-worker David (Kevin Bacon). Cal immediately moves out of their home and spent several nights in a bar where he randomly talks to strangers about her failed marriage and this got the attention of Jacob (Ryan Gosling), a womanizer who also frequents the same bar to seduce ladies. Jacob offered Cal to “train” him on how to be a better man whom ladies would salivate for. As Cal slowly transforms to become a ladies man, Jacob then faces off with Hanna (Emma Stone), a woman she tried to hit on before but didn’t bite however she comes back later on to challenge him. While his parents deal with their breakup, Cal and Emily’s 13-year-old son Robbie (Jonah Bobo) is suffering from an unrequited love to the family’s long-time babysitter, 17-year- old Jessica (America’s Next Top Model’s Analeigh Tipton) who in turn is harboring a secret feelings for Cal!

The movie’s strength is the cast as they deliver knock out performances while playing each other’s off smoothly. Steve Carell did a great job as the movie’s anchor as he was able to mix comedy and drama very well. Cal will say some funny stuff about a situation he is in but despite the humor you could still feel the inner emotional turmoil he’s experiencing. Cal’s emotional moments never went overdramatic yet Carell pulls off a suffering man amazingly. Moore is also great as a woman undergoing a midlife crisis but make no mistake as Moore was also as good in the comedic scenes as well. Carell and Moore complemented each other and they give realistic portrayal whose marriage is on the rocks.

Women will definitely swoon over Gosling while men will find Stone’s charms irresistible. Their story is just secondary to Cal and Emily’s but the “game changing” moment that Jacob and Hanna shared was electrifying and raw. That scene was effective thanks to Gosling and Stone’s remarkable performances and sizzling chemistry.

Jonah Bobo’s Robbie is this movie’s scene stealer and while kids playing “wise beyond their years” had been done a lot of times already, Bobo manages to play Robbie with such innocent poignancy and sweetness that you just can’t help but root for the little guy.

There’s a major scene in this movie where everything comes in full circle and I advice everyone not to read the movie on Wikipedia or IMDB for it could spoil that particular moment. The movie did follow a predictable path towards the end but while there’s nothing innovative about it, Crazy Stupid Love is still one of the better romantic-comedies that graced the wide screen in a while and is definitely worth the ticket.

Crazy Stupid Love opens in the Philippines on August 17.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: August 20, 2011)

LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem ties Lady GaGa's Born This Way as the second longest running #1 song this year with 6 weeks atop the chart. Leading the pack is Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" which ruled for 7 weeks and LMFAO's track could tie Adele's record next week.

But to make it for a 7th week will be a challenge for the dance track as Party Rock Anthem will once again be challenged by Katy Perry's Last Friday Night for the top spot next week and this time the competition will be close as a remix version of Katy Perry's hit was released this week wherein combined sales of the remix and original could finally propel Perry's track to the summit. This strategy happened earlier this year with Rihanna's S&M , the song was stuck at #2 behind Katy Perry's E.T but remix (dubbed as "Rih-mix") of the track featuring Britney Spears pushed the song to #1 for a single week. Will this happen for Last Friday Night? Let's wait and see

Bruno Mars scores his 6th top 5 hit with Bad Meet Evil's "Lighters" climbing to #5 this week. Bruno Mars hit #1 as featured act on B.o.B's debut single Nothin' on You and his own songs Just The Way You Are and Grenade. He has two songs that peaked at #4 Travie McCoy's Billonaire and his latest single The Lazy Song.

It's 1999 all over again as two former teen pop princesses both appear on this week's Top 10. At #7 is Britney Spears' "I Wanna Go" and one notch below is Christina Aguilera with Maroon Five's Moves Like Jagger where she is featured.

Speaking of "Moves Like Jagger", the track matches its debut peak at #8 this week due to sales surge in the wake of the song's performance at America's Got Talent and The Today Show. The song is still #1 on iTunes and with rising airplay to boot, the song will definitely have a new peak next week.

The longest chart sitter ''If I Die Young" is a non-mover at #14 on its 37th week on the chart. With this song still going strong it will likely have chart life of 50 to 60 weeks. Stay tuned.
