Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: April 7, 2012)

We Are Young by fun. feat Janelle Monae stays on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for a 4th consecutive week. The song is still dominating the sales front selling over 387K this week and rapidly rising on the airplay chart (already in the top 5 on the airplay chart). The song is also ruling the the newly-launched On-Demand streaming chart. With all the key elements in its favor the song is expected to rule for several week, my guess is 8 weeks at least.

Meanwhile, Kelly Clarkson's Stronger and The Wanted's Glad You Came are non-movers at #2 and #3 followed by Gotye and Kimbra's Somebody that I Used to Know which ascends #5-#4. Nicki Minaj's notches her second solo top 5 hit (after the #3 hit Super Bass) as Starships climbs #6-#5 this week. The song debuted at #10 six weeks ago and stay on the top 10 for its entire run. Starships debuted that same as Katy Perry's Part of Me which bowed at #1 but since then the song has steadily dropped until today as the song climbs #10-#8.

Inching closer to the top 10 is One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful which soars #19 to #11 this week. Also earning a new peak positions in the top 20 are Train's Drive By (up #15-#13), Calvin Harris' Feel So Close (up #18-#15) and Canadian Idol alumna Carly Rae Jaepsen with Call Me Maybe (#23-#18).

This week's top debut is at #19 with Taylor Swift's Eyes Open from The Hunger Games soundtrack. This beats the #30 debut and peak of Swift's first The Hunger Games single Safe and Sound which zooms #71 - #35 this week.

Looks like longest chart sitter, Adele's Rolling in the Deep, will finally go recurrent soon as the song drops #33-#43 on its 64th week on the chart but the song already reached this level several weeks ago but a Grammy boost sent this song as high as #5.

Florence + The Machine's Shake It Out drops out and goes recurrent this week as the song spent 20 weeks on the chart already despite peaking at #72.

Midweek Musings 21

*The last time I did a midweek musings post was last January. Not that I never had the itch to do so it's just that other stuff that I wanted to post just got in the way (and yes laziness too).

* It's the season of resignation at the office :( I understand their decision but to be honest it could have been prevented early on. But oh well :( In my almost 3 years with the company I saw a lot of people come and go. I guess it's just the nature for the line of work I'm in. And I know in bigger companies it's more brutal. But still whenever a person resigns it still makes me sad.

*It's been 4 years since I graduated from college. 4 years! So that means it has been 8 years since I entered college. I still can't believe how time flies so fast. I so miss my college days but it's all but a memory now. I'm no longer the same man I was 4 years ago. I miss my old self though. I was just so idealistic back then and now? Well I think I'm settling for complacency. But a lot has happened in my personal life over the years that changed me. I'm thankful for what I have experience because it made me stronger. I fully understood what they were telling me when I was a student that the real world is so different. I thought I already prepared myself to face the "real word" but it was not the case. You can never be ready I guess.

* I'm turning 25 in September this year. What's funny is that back when I was a kid, I thought by the time I reached 25 I'm already married but now I can't see imagine myself getting married anytime soon at all. But you know what I do want to raise my own family in the future especially since I had a taste of parenthood via my beloved nephew. It's so tough to take care of a child but I love every second of it. But I'm not ready yet to have my own family as I'm not financially and emotionally ready for it. And yes I still have yet to find the "one" as they say. What's weird is that I already have back up plans in my head just in case things don't go as I hope hahaha.

*To be honest the future scares me. Maybe because I'm in the age where I feel I should be shaping mypath clearly already. I'm afraid that by the time I reached 30, I have nowhere to go. I know I should be making big decisions by now. But it's tough and scary. I can do this I know. As they say in Hunger Games (which I will review hopefully this week if I can muster up the energy) may the odds be in my favor.

Review: The Muppets

I’ve been waiting for the local release of The Muppets ever since I first heard snippets of their showstopping number “Life’s a Happy Song” late last year and boy it really took awhile for this movie to finally get here. But the long wait was worth it as The Muppets is a joy to watch on the big screen as it will make you sing, dance, laugh and cry all at the same time.

Gary (Jason Segel) takes his girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) to Los Angeles to celebrate their anniversary however he tags along his brother Walter so he can also visit the Muppets studios. Once they get there, they discovered that the studio is closing down as business tycoon Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) plans to destroy the entire studio for oil drilling. The group informs the almost-retired Kermit the Frog of the situation and they soon went on a mission to assemble the old crew to perform a Muppets Telethon to save the studio.

The story is definitely in line with the Muppets tradition of deliberate silliness and heightened reality (a muppet and a human as brothers?) but it doesn’t matter anyway as it is charismatic enough to make it work. What’s amazing though is that underneath the meta jokes and goofball gags lies a story about mourning the world that moved on without you and the uncertainty on returning to a place you once loved. The movie poses the question “Has the world become too cynical for The Muppets?” and The Muppets in its own absurd way examined this ordeal vividly and would actually make you evaluate how we often dismiss the value of things in the past just because they are passé.

The Muppets openly pulls in your nostalgic heartstrings but it does not feel manipulative because there’s genuine passion and affection poured into the production. The musical number “Pictures in My Head” featuring Kermit the Frog reminiscing the good ol’ days of "The Muppets Show" is a poignant scene that embodies how this film is not just a throwaway project to cash in on an established brand name. When the "The Muppets Show" telethon begun I had goosebumps upon seeing the opening sequence. I actually don’t recall if I ever watched an actual "The Muppets Show" episode on television before (or maybe I was just too young to remember) but the opening sequence felt so familiar, it’s like welcoming an old friend back.

The music definitely elevated the movie even more thanks to Bret McKenzie (of Flight of the Conchords fame) who did a terrific job. It’s actually brilliant that they got McKenzie to do the job as his wit and sensibilities match the movie’s bizarrely sweet tone. The Oscar-winning song “Man or a Muppet” proves why McKenzie was the perfect choice. Adams and Segel are just supporting characters but these actors have the perfect personalities to complement the movie’s atmosphere. And while Cooper didn’t add that much to his one-dimensional villain character just seeing him rap is worth the admission. There are a lot of celebrity cameos in the movie but the one that involves Jim Parsons was the crowd favorite.

It’s unfortunate that after the long wait The Muppets has to open the same week as the highly-anticipated "The Hunger Games". I’m afraid there won’t be a lot of people interested enough to see this movie, which is a shame because The Muppets delivers unadulterated entertainment, and most importantly optimism that you don’t often see in movies these days that often favors the jaded. This not just a comeback vehicle for these lovable puppets but a loving tribute that would make its creator Jim Henson proud. 10 / 10

The Muppets is now showing on all digital cinemas nationwide

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: March 31, 2012)

We Are Young by fun. feat Janelle Monae logs its 3rd consecutive week at #1 at the Billboard Hot 100. The song is still leading iTunes by a wide margin and with rising airplay to boot looks like this song will spend at least 6 weeks at #1 or more.

There's not much chart action on the top 10 this week with only Flo Rida and Sia's Wild Ones entering the top 10 with #12-#9 climb this week. This is Flo Rida's 7th top 10 hit after Low (10 weeks at #1 in 2007), Right Round (6 weeks at #1 in 2009), In The Ayer (#9), Sugar (#5), Club Can't Handle Me (#9) and most recently Good Feeling (#3).

Train enters the Top 20 as Drive By climbs #21 to #15 making it the band's 5th top 20 hit. On the other hand, British/Irish boyband One Direction leaps #33 to #19 with What Makes You Beautiful. This is the song's highest chart. This surpasses the peak position of Westlife's sole charting single in the US, Swear It Again, which peaked at #20 in 1999. Could One Direction follow fellow European boyband The Wanted (which is #3 this week with Glad You Came) and earn a top 5 hit? They could as the song is in the top 10 of iTunes right and has growing airplay. Plus their debut album bowed at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart so definitely there's an interest with the US audience with this teen sensation.

LMFAO's Party Rock Anthem spends a full year on the Hot 100 logging its 52nd week on the chart this week (down slightly #26-#27) but the longest staying song on the chart is still Adele's phenomenal Rolling in the Deep raking in its #63rd week on the chart (down #30-#33). These songs were the Top 2 singles on the 2011 Billboard Hot 100 Year-end chart.

Philippine Box Office Roundup 5

Here's my 5th edition of my Philippine Box Office Roundup and you can read my previous recap here. And as always here are some notes with regards to my box office roundup:
  • The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
  • Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
  • I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
  • Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below.
***

Four new movies were shown last week to middling results. Leading the pack is Star Cinema's Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang earning $478K/ 20 million PHP, good enough to land on the #15 spot and will likely surpass fellow Star Cinema movies A Mother's Story (24 million) and My Cactus Heart (23 million) to be the 2nd highest grossing local film this year (by a wide gap since the #1 movie so fat this year, UnOfficially Yours is far ahead with 157 million PHP). Another local flick made its debut, GMA Films' My Kontrabida Girl earned $156K / 6.7 million PHP good enough to beat Viva Films's Hitman which earned 5.7 million PHP during its entire theatrical run. The last GMA films movie The Road from November last year earned 36 million PHP.

Meanwhile, two family movies opened last week and looks like they cannibalize each other with so-so results. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax opened with $300k / $12.8 million PHP, a little low for an animated flick in 3D while a retelling of the Snow White fairy Mirror, Mirror only earned $150K / 6.4 million PHP, the lowest-grossing movie among the new releases.

Elsewhere on the chart, John Carter (which earlier this week made headlines when its studio, Disney, admitted that the they will lose $200 million due to the movie's high production budget and disappointing worldwide box office) jumped to 4th place this week earning $1.6 million / 69 million PHP and will surpass Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance next week but will likely stay in 4th place because The Hunger Games will open next week and I expect it to open huge. Let's see ;)

Here are the Philippine Box Office charts (both in dollars and pesos) as I originally posted at the BoxOffice.com forums:

The Muppets Opens Today!

I know 'The Hunger Games" is the movie event of the week (which I will definitely watch as well since I love Jennifer Lawrence!) but there's one little movie also opening in Philippine theaters today and that is "The Muppets"! FINALLY! It took so long for this movie to get here and I was actually worried it won't be shown here at all! Anyway, the movie won an Oscar for Best Original Song for "Man or Muppet" by Flight of the Conchords' Bret McKenzie. I'm actually looking forward to see the "Life's a Happy Song" performance, a song which I instantly loved when I first heard it last November (my 3 year old nephew also loves this song and knows parts of the song). I grew up with Kermit the Frog and well I'm sucker for this kind of children's entertainment even if I'm a grown 24-year old man haha! The movie has amazing reviews in general and it stars two actors I like Jason Segel and Amy Adams so more reasons to watch this! I'm thinking of bringing my nephew to see this but I'm not sure if he's old enough to behave inside the theater :D Anyway, I hope the movie does good enough in the box office despite a bigger movie opening this week. Hopefully, I can write a review and post it here :) We'll see!

Download TeleNovela Channel Theme Songs!

What I love about telenovelas in general are their theme songs! Even though I don't understand them, those tunes adds character to the TV show and engage me even more to watch it. A theme song highlights the texture and mood of a TV show and when it is sung and produced well it heightens the viewing experience. What I love about our soaps at TeleNovela Channel is that the Filipino versions of the respective theme songs of each soap and I must say that the translated versions are as good as the originals! Anyway, you can now own the songs (and minus one versions as well if you want to have your own version!) FOR FREE at TeleNovela Channel's website, just click here to download the mp3 versions of the theme songs.

Here's the track list:
  1. Init ng Pagmamahal (Passion OST) Jay Marquez and Faith Cuneta
  2. Kahit Hiram na Sandali (Madrasta OST) Jasmine Abrenica
  3. Ako Ba’y Aasa Pa (In The Name of Love OST) Faith Cuneta
  4. Haplos sa Awit (The Two Sides of Ana OST) Daryl Ong
  5. Init ng Pagmamahal (Passion OST) Carlo Orosa and Jasmine Abrenica
  6. Init ng Pagmamahal (Minus One)
  7. Kahit Hiram na Sandali (Minus One)
  8. Ako Ba’y Aasa Pa (Minus One)
  9. Haplos sa Awit (Minus One)

My personal favorite is Kahit Hiram na Sandali from Madrasta. It's a serious case of LSS! :)

The best trailer I've seen so far this year! Maybe it's the haunting score that got me but this definitely gave me goosebumps and is now one of my anticipated films this year!

Philippine Box Office Roundup 4

Here's my 4th edition of my Philippine Box Office Roundup and you can read my previous recap here.
  • Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below

***

Unofficially Yours continues to lead the Philippine Box Office 2012 as the movie raked in 157 million PHP / $3,704,457 as of March 11. The movie already lost a lot of screens since there are 2 local movies that opened this week (Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang and My Kontrabida Girl) but I think the movie could still earn good enough to cross 160 million pesos but it's not assured yet. Anyway, the movie is miles ahead of the other movies on the chart but as the Hollywood Blockbuster season begins we could see movies that could topple it in the succeeding weeks.

The first large-scale Hollywood flick to enter this year is Disney's John Carter which debuts on the chart at #10 earning 34,976,041 PHP / $823,935 since its release last March 9. The movie faltered in the US Box office but in the country it did fine. The other new release is the Oscar-nominated movie Moneyball which like the previous "Oscar" movies didn't earn that much with only $49,958 / 2,120,717 PHP gross since its release last March 7. The movie is tough sell despite the presence of a major star Brad Pitt as the movie is about baseball and statistics (two things not exactly popular subject matter here for a movie) but I personally enjoyed it despite my lack of baseball knowledge. I'm grateful that it had the chance to be screened here unlike the other "Oscar" movies.

Moreover, only 6/9 Best Picture nominees were released here and only The Tree of Life was released in 2011. Last year 8 / 10 of the Best Picture nominees were shown here in commercial theaters . The Help initially had a screening date here but it was pulled out and went straight to video instead while Midnight in Paris was never shown here nor is it available on original video. Oscar winner The Artist could still be shown here maybe as an Ayala Cinemas Exclusive like last year's winner The King's Speech but that remains to be seen since the other nominated movies with bigger names attached struggled in the local box office so what more a black and white silent film? I'm personally hoping a local distributor picks it up and get a release here because I want to feel how is it like to watch a silent film on the big screen. Here's the box office performance of the Oscar-nominated movies:

  1. Hugo - 4,407,536 PHP / $103,206
  2. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close - 3,643,823 PHP / $85,838
  3. The Descendants - 3,166,812 PHP / $74,601
  4. Moneyball - 2,120,717 PHP / $49,958
  5. War Horse - 2,032,464 PHP / $47,879
  6. The Tree of Life - 841,947 / $19490

Elsewhere on the chart, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance surpasses Journey 2: The Mysterious Island to be the 3rd highest grossing movie of the year while The Vow moves up to 6th place placing Alvin and the Chipmunks 3: Chipwrecked down to #7. One for the Money earns enough to get out of last place and is now ahead of 5 movies.

The much anticipated movie adaptation of The Hunger Games opens on March 21 and I'm very excited to see how it fairs on the box office. It will be huge for sure but how huge is the questions ;)

Here are the Philippine Box Office charts (both in dollars and pesos) as I originally posted at BoxOffice.com forums

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: March 24 2012)

Billboard Hot 100 made some changes on the chart formula but that didn't stop fun. and Janelle Monae's We Are Young to secure a second week on top the chart. Billboard added On-Demand streaming (subscriber-based online streaming of music) in their calculations which actually helped We Are Young even more as the song tops the inaugural 'On Demand Songs" chart. Billboard reports that sales and radio airplay still has higher percentage in the tally although it's been slashed to give way for On-Demand streaming points. I believe this a a welcome development to the chart as it is reflecting the current trends in music right now.

These are the online streaming services now included in the Hot 100 formula: MOG, Muve Music, Rdio, Rhapsody, Slacker and Spotify. Also included are radio streams from Rhapsody and Slacker, on-demand audio streams from My Space and Guvera, and plays on video request service Akoo will be accounted as well.

Elsewhere on the chart, the #2 to #4 songs hold their position from last week while 4-week UK Singles Chart #1 single Somebody That I Used to Know climbs #9 to #5. Billboard reports that the new formula benefited the song as it is one of the top 5 songs on the new chart thus increasing its points.

Also getting a bump due to the revamp is Drake's Take Care featuring Rihanna which climbs #11 to #7, it's highest position to date. Speaking or Rihanna, her former 10-week #1 We Found Love exits the top 10 (#11 this week) after 23-week run in the top 10.

This week's top debut comes from John Mayer's new song Shadow Days debuting at #42. Would you believe that Mayer didn't have a top 10 song yet? His highest peaking song is Say which peaked at #12 in 2007. He has 6 more top 20 hits: No Such Thing (#13), Your Body Is A Wonderland (#18), Daughters (#19), Waiting On The World To Change (#14), Who Says (#17) and Fallout Boy's cover of Michael Jackson's Beat It (#19) in which he was a featured artist.

Adele's Rolling in the Deep is still the longest chart sitter and still there are no signs that the song will drop out soon as it climbs #32 to #30 on its 62nd week on the chart. On the opposite of longevity, Far East Movement's Live My Life which features Justin Bieber which debuted at #21 last week drops out this week as sales plummeted after the initial sales rush which is likely caused by Justin Bieber's role on the song. Bieber tracks usually fly on the sales charts on its first few days or release then drops like a rock. Also dropping out is Madonna's Give Me All Your Luvin which only spent 5 weeks but peaked at #10 thanks to strong initial sales.
