Here's the 9th edition of my Philippine Box Office Roundup and you can read my previous recap here. And as always here are some notes with regards to my box office roundup:
- The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
- Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
- I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
- Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn so it's not on the charts below.
Battleship opens strong earning roughly 46 million pesos when it opened last week. This is an impressive performance from a new franchise and without 3D boosting it. This is Taylor Kitsch's second movie this year, the first one was John Carter which so far earned 87 million pesos. Battleship will sail past 100 million pesos in the next couple of weeks.
Moron 5 and the Crying Lady opened two weeks ago but Box Office Mojo didn't have its numbers last week but here it is now. In two weeks the comedy movie earned 44 million pesos, a strong showing for a local flick and will likely overtake Corazon: Ang Unang Aswang (51 million pesos) as the second highest grossing local film this year.
Titanic 3D widens the gap as the highest 3D rerelease this year as the movie earned 17 million pesos already. Meanwhile, thanks to the 3D rerelease Titanic's lifetime gross worldwide is now $2 billion, the second movie to do that after well, Avatar. James Cameron is indeed the king of the world, box office wise ;)
It's safe to say that The Hunger Games will not overtake UnOfficially Yours for the top spot as the the movie is already entering its 5th week and it will lost more theaters next week when The Avengers open so there's no more time to catch up but nevertheless it's an amazing performance for the movie and the sequel Catching Fire set for November 2013 release will likely be bigger.
Here are the Philippine Box Office charts (both in dollars and pesos) as I originally posted at the BoxOffice.com forums:
Top Movies for 2012 (as of April 15, 2012)
** The gross for John Carter & The Devil Inside are both adjusted down on the latest Box Office Mojo report
*** Moneyball is ranked higher in this chart compared to the Dollars gross chart due to changes in the US Dollar-Peso exchange rate.
