Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: Oct. 6, 2012)

Maroon Five's One More Night logs a second week atop the Billboard Hot 100 blocking worldwide sensation Gangnam Style by Psy which zooms #11-#2 this week. One More Night defeated Gangnam Style thanks to strong airplay which the pop culture sensation is still rising but still far from One More Night's audience impression. Can Psy beat Maroon Five next week? Let's wait and see!

This week's top debut is Christina Aguilera with her new song Your Body entering the chart at #34. The following songs dropped out and went recurrent this week: Train's Drive By (peak: 10, 36 weeks), Nicki Minaj's Starships (peak: 5, 31 weeks) and Usher's Scream (peak: 9, 21 weeks). fun.'s We Are Young (#38) and Ellie Goulding's Lights (#10) are still the longest running songs on the chart with 40 weeks each.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Philippine Box Office Recap 28

To check out the previous recap click here and always reminders and disclaimers:

  • The following box office stats are from the ever awesome Box Office Mojo's Philippine Box Office Index. Thus, my box office comparisons and analysis are only limited to what Box Office Mojo has in its records
  • Studios and local distributors sometimes issues press releases about the box office performance of their movies and there are instances that they do not exactly match the data Box Office Mojo have in hand. I'm not sure how wide Box Office Mojo's scope is with our local theaters but for the purposes of a consistent discussion and analysis I will only focus on the numbers posted at Box Office Mojo.
  • I added some stuff like the Mission Impossible : Ghost Protocol box office for 2012 since Box Office Mojo does not include that 2011 holdover on their Top Movies 2012 list. Meanwhile the box office numbers for the holdovers from the MMFF last year are not on BOM's list so they're not on here as well.
  • Box Office Mojo does not have the numbers for Ayala Cinemas Exclusive My Week with Marilyn and local movie Gun Guni so it's not on the charts below.
The Mistress continue to dominate the box office and overtakes UnOfficially Yours as the top local movie of 2012 earning P186.7 million  against the latter's P157 million gross.  All new releases disappointed with Dredd topping the new entries with a paltry P5.3 million. Regal's Shake, Rattle & Roll spinoff Pridyider did awful with P3.6 million, the lowest opening number for a local release from a major studio. American indie flick Ruby Sparks did OK for a movie with no stars and offbeat concept earning P2.7 million.

Here is the latest Philippine Box Office tally as originally posted at BoxOffice forums

Review: The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Coming of age stories are dime a dozen from books to TV shows and most especially movies. With a plethora of growing up stories out there, it really is a tall order for one to stand out. One might dismiss The Perks of Being a Wallflower as one of those generic tales but this movie takes a familiar story to a whole new direction thanks to strong characterization and heartfelt commitment to the material.

Set in the early 90s, Charlie (Logan Lerman) is a troubled kid entering his first day in high school. He never stood out before and he believes that things will stay the same that is until he meets seniors Patrick (Ezra Miller) and Sam (Emma Watson). Together with Patrick and Sam, Charlie discovers the joys and pains of growing up and at the same time wrestling with the memories of his haunted past.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is adapted to the big screen by the novel's author Stephen Chbosky and one can see how this material is very important to him. He handles the adaptation with so much care and eye for detail which I believe will please most fans of the book. The novel is written in epistolary form wherein Charlie tells his story through writing letters to an anonymous person. Adapting that format to the big screen made it look like it's just a gimmick to have a voice over narration but the script and Lerman's performance carries it through. Still, there are in things in the novel that were left out (For example, Charlie's sister has a smaller role) but overall the movie fully captures the novel's tone and atmosphere.

The story is very accessible even for those who haven't read the source material. The structure is basically simple and something that most people could relate to. It really is all about growing up and the pain and pleasure that comes along with it. What makes The Perks of Being a Wallflower special is that the movie does not pass judgment and just lets you in to the world of these kids who are young, adventurous and full of potential yet so unfocused and fragile. It does not escape the cliches known to this genre but the characters are fascinating and genuine that watching their journey is so engrossing to watch.

Committed performances from the cast strengthen the movie even more. Lerman, in particular, fully embodied Charlie delivering a nuanced but knockout performance. He fully captures the vulnerability of a troubled teen like Charlie. He gets the small details right, making Charlie a well-developed character that you just couldn't help but be draw on to. Watson is a playing a totally different character from the role that made her famous and she nails it. Miller is so charismatic, funny and sweet that one would not think that he played a terrifying character in We Need to Talk About Kevin so effectively a year ago.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower does not tell anything new or groundbreaking about youth issues but what it does best is showing the serious side of being a teenager with so much sensibility and sincerity. It's a journey that one has seen (and experienced in one way or another) but this movie reminds us that no matter how crazy those years have been, it's all worth it.

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: September 29, 2012)

Maroon Five nabs their #1 as One More Night ascends #2 to #1 this week on the Billboard Hot 100.  Maroon Five's other #1 singles were Makes Me Wonder (2007) and last year's smash Moves Like Jagger with Christina Aguilera. They almost had another #1 hit this year with Payphone that debuted at #3 and staye in  the top 3 for 15 weeks but only peaked at #2 (it was blocked by the pop culture phenomenon Call Me Maybe).

Making a big leap this week is the latest dance crazy Gangnam Style by South Korean artist Psy, the song skyrockets #64 to #11 this week. The song is currently on top of  iTunes and rising in airplay so the has a good chance to top the chart. Let's wait and see

Ellie Goulding's Lights and fun.'s We Are Young are still tied for the longevity honors as both songs spends their 39th week on the chart.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Philippine Box Office Recap 27

The Mistress opens with a bang earning 106 million on its opening 5-day weekend! The latest John Lloyd Cruz-Bea Alonzo movie is the biggest opening for a local movie this year defeating the John Lloyd Cruz-Angel Locsin movie UnOfficially Yours which earned an excellent 71 million on its first 5 days. The Mistress also beats No Other Woman's 93 million opening last year. The movie is on  track for a P200+ million finish. Let's wait and see if this will have the legs to beat No Other Woman as the all time Filipino drama box office champ.

Also opening well is Resident Evil: Retribution which earned P64 million, stronger than the last installment (Resident Evil: Aftelife) which opened with 28 million in 2010 but it didn't have the advantage of 3D and IMAX releases.

Here is the latest Philippine Box Office tally as originally posted at BoxOffice forums

Billboard Hot 100 (Issue Date: September 15, 2012)

Taylor Swift's We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together returns to the top spot of the Billboard Hot 100 after being dislodged by Flo Rida' Whistle which drops to #3 this week. Meanwhile, Maroon Five earns their 3rd consecutive Top 2 hit as One More Night advances to #2 this week? Will this single achieve what Payphone failed to do so? Let's wait and see.

Pink's Blow Me (One Last Kiss) earns a new peak this week as the song jumps #11-#6 this week while British artist Alex Clare sends his first charted single to top 10 as Too Close ascends #15 to #10.

This week's top debut comes from Taylor Swift with her charity single Ronan which enters the chart at #16. Also entering the chart this week is Alicia Keys' Girl on Fire which debuts at #37.

Dropping out and going recurrent this week is Kelly Clarkson's #1 smash Stronger which stayed on the charts for 37 weeks and topped the charts for 2 weeks this year. With Stronger gone, the longest staying songs are now shared by fun's We Are Young and Ellie Goulding's Lights which has been on the charts for 38 weeks. We Are Young is down to #32 while Lights is still hanging on at #5 so it's safe to say that Lights will get the longevity crown for a long time.

Here is this week's Billboard Hot 100 as posted at Pulse Music Board:

Philippine Box Office Roundup 26

It's a very weak week on the Philippine Box Office as the top new release, The Watch, just earned P8.5 million while the rest of the newcomers failed to ignite the box office. SM exclusive The Raid: Redemption earned P2.2 million pesos while Ayala exclusive ParaNorman grossed P2.1 million. Meanwhile, Star Cinema-distributed independent films Cinemalaya entry Bwakaw (P1.5 million) and Brillante Mendoza's Captive (P1.1 million) did small business as expected.

Here is the latest Philippine Box Office tally as originally posted at BoxOffice forums
