The 2012 Billboard Year-end Hot 100

I shared my Top 20 predictions two weeks ago and now Billboard finally releases their year end chart for 2012. Here was last year's  top 100 or your reference. And I got the top 4 correct and well that's it as my #5-#20 predictions are all incorrect!  Here's the rundown of  the year end chart highlights:

New artists dominated the Hot 100 this year as the six of the top 10 are all songs from first time charters on the Hot 100. Topping the list is Somebody That I Used to Know by Gotye feat Kimbra which ruled the chart for 8 weeks. Gotye could be in danger of being dubbed as a one hit wonder (like 2005's #1 song Bad Day by Daniel Powter) if he fails to follow it up with another hit. Settling for #2 is Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen which was #1 for 9 weeks. Unlike Gotye, Jepsen won't have to worry as she is no longer a one hit wonder with Good Time (a collaboration with former one hit wonder Owl City) which was a hit (peaked at #8) and landed at #38 on the year-end chart. Bronze medalist We Are Young  by fun. feat Janelle Monae also survived the one hit wonder status as their follow up Some Nights charted well (peaked at #3) and is seated at #14 for the year-end chart. Despite not reaching #1 (thanks to pop culture phenomenon Call Me Maybe), Maroon Five's Payphone lands at #4 spot while their follow up single One More Night which was #1 for 9 weeks (and this time blocked a pop culture phenomenon Gangnam Style to #1) settled for a #18 placing on the yearend chart.

I underestimated Ellie Goulding's Lights which nabbed the 5th spot and overestimated the early hits this year Rihanna's We Found Love (#8), LMFAO's Sexy and I Know It (#13) and Adele's Set Fire to the Rain (#12)  all of which I predicted higher positions. Two British boybands made it to the top 10 The Wanted's Glad You Came (#6) and One Direction's What Makes You Beautiful (#10). Kelly Clarkson's Stronger nabs the #7th spot marking her return in the year-end Top 10. In 2005, Clarkson had two songs in the year-end top 10 Since U Been Gone (#4) and Behind These Hazel Eyes (#10).

Maroon Five and Nicki Minaj are the only artists to have songs to make it on both the 2011 and 2012 year end charts top 10. In 2011, Maroon  Five had Moves Like Jagger at #9  and Payphone at #4 this year while Nicki Minaj charted with Super Bass at #9 in 2011 and Starships lands at #9 this year. Meanwhile, Flo Rida scored three top 20 songs (which I predicted but with the wrong positions) Wild Ones (#11), Good Feeling (#16) and Whistle (#17). Meanwhile, I overestimated Justin Bieber's Boyfriend and Taylor Swift's We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together which I predicted at #17 and #20 respectively but they are way lower at #28 and #33, respectively.

Last year's Top 2 songs still made it on this year's chart: #1 Rolling in the Deep by Adele is #71 this year while #2 Party Rock Anthem by LMFAO is at #29. Worldwide dance craze Gangnam Style by Psy which stalled at #2 for 7 straight weeks makes it to the top 50 at #47. This year's American Idol Phillip Phillips did well as his coronation song Home makes it to #49. This marks the first time since 2008 when David Cook's Time of My Life charted at #69 that Idol coronation song made it to the year-end list.
